Emerging BioTech

The world-changing release, by virologist Professor Eddie Holmes on 11 January 2020, of the genetic code of the SARS CoV 2 virus to the world via tweet enabled scientists around the world to start investigating the virus and subsequently its variants that would impact everyone, globally, without exception.   The global release of the code placed scientists across the globe on a level playing field in the race to find vaccines, treatments and perhaps ultimately a remedy and fostered an unprecedented level of collaboration.

Professor Holmes is going to join us to share his story of the release of the genetic code for SARS CoV 2 virus and the impacts arising from his actions.  The release of the code also raised important questions for creators of intellectual property and their advisers and our interview with Professor Holmes will be followed by a panel discussion of industry and commercialisation specialists who will examine the myriad commercialisation opportunities which this release has opened up and what the future is for commercialisation of downstream products from material released into the public domain.

Space

The Australian Space Industry – Building new horizons

The Australian space industry is expected to add 20,000 jobs and triple in size to become a $12 billion industry by 2030.   Blasting this industry into the future is the SmartSat CRC– the biggest space industry research collaboration in Australia’s history with over 100+ organisations and $245Million in R&D commitment. In this session hear from Andrew Beveridge, the Chief Operating Officer of the SmartSat CRC, about how they have structured the CRC and IP agreements to facilitate collaboration and commercialisation, and the Kanyini space services mission  - the first satellite to be launched by a State government. Kanyini is a collaboration between the SA Government, and SA companies Inovor and Myriota. Inovor  are designing and building the satellite, and once launched Myriota will manage the satellite including collection and delivery of data to the SA Government. In this session, hear about the commercial challenges involved in bringing this mission together, and take the opportunity to ask some questions of the panel about the new horizons for business that space is providing.
